GET TO KNOW YOUR DRINK

What is Jebena Buna?

Buna means coffee in Amharic. A jebena is the traditional clay pot used to brew and pour it. The name brings the drink and its vessel together: coffee prepared in the Ethiopian tradition.

The pot has a rounded body, a narrow neck and a pouring spout. Small cups are part of the familiar serving arrangement. The decorated, handleless cup shown here sits beside the black clay jebena.

Coffee has a place in Ethiopian hospitality that reaches beyond the drink itself. A coffee gathering creates time for conversation and company, with the preparation and serving becoming part of the welcome.

From bean to small cup.

Traditional Ethiopian coffee preparation follows a patient sequence of roasting, grinding and brewing.

  1. Roast the beans

Green coffee beans are roasted, developing their colour and aroma. In a traditional coffee gathering, this preparation is part of the shared experience.

  2. Grind & brew

The roasted beans are ground and brewed with water in a jebena. The distinctive clay pot is central to this style of coffee preparation.

  3. Pour & share

The brewed coffee is poured into small cups. Conversation and snacks, including popcorn in many coffee gatherings, accompany the serving.

A small cup. A rich pause.

What does it taste like?

Traditional jebena coffee is known for a strong, aromatic brew. Its flavour comes from the coffee beans and roast, so the experience is about the aroma and character of brewed coffee rather than a fixed set of tasting notes.

If this is your first cup, pause for the aroma, let it cool to a comfortable temperature and begin with a small sip.

How to enjoy it

At Taste of Ethiopia, Jebena Buna comes with popcorn. Make room for it after your meal, or make the coffee itself the reason to spend a little time at the table.

There is no need to know a ceremony or special routine before enjoying it. Settle in, take your time and let the conversation continue between sips.
