01 · MEANING

What it means.

The "festival of breaking the fast" begins Shawwal after a month of fasting, prayer and reflection. Ethiopia's long Islamic history gives the day distinct local expressions from Addis Ababa to Harar and beyond.

02 · TRADITION

How it is marked.

The morning begins with prayer after the giving of zakat al-fitr. Families visit one another, children receive gifts and tables are prepared for guests, with food shared widely.

03 · EXPERIENCE

What you may see.

Large prayers may fill open spaces and mosque courtyards. In Harar, one of Islam's historic cities, the celebration is woven into the lanes, homes and strong community traditions of the old city.
