What it means.

On 5 May 1941, Emperor Haile Selassie returned to Addis Ababa. The holiday remembers the resistance of arbegnoch, the patriots who fought occupation inside Ethiopia.

02 · TRADITION

How it is marked.

Veterans, families, officials and the public take part in wreath-laying, remembrance and patriotic ceremonies. Stories of resistance and sacrifice are passed to younger generations.

The day is commemorative and civic. Monuments and public squares in Addis Ababa often provide the setting for formal events.
