01 · MEANING

What it means.

Buhe coincides with the Ethiopian Orthodox Feast of the Transfiguration and has become a much-loved neighbourhood tradition associated with light, renewal and the approaching end of the rains.

02 · TRADITION

How it is marked.

Groups of boys move from home to home singing the rhythmic Hoya Hoye refrain. Families answer with pieces of warm mulmul bread or small gifts, and communities may gather around a bonfire.

03 · EXPERIENCE

What you may see.

The sound is part of the occasion: call-and-response singing and the crack of handmade whips announce each group. Debre Tabor is particularly associated with the festival.
