Golden Teji Ethiopian honey wine in a round-bodied traditional berele glass with a narrow neck

Teji

$10 AUD

Traditional Ethiopian, naturally fermented honey wine.

What to know

The drink

Teji belongs to the family of honey wines, often called mead. Its defining ingredient is honey, which is mixed with water and fermented. This process produces alcohol and changes the sweetness and flavour of the drink.

What to expect

Tej can combine honey aroma and sweetness with a fermented tang and botanical character. It is often golden or yellow, and may be cloudy. The exact balance varies with the honey and how it is made.

How to enjoy it

The traditional berele makes tej immediately recognisable. Its rounded body and narrow opening give it a very different appearance from a stemmed wine glass.
