Lalibela’s eleven medieval churches were cut from the rock itself, with doorways, pillars and passages formed within the stone. They remain places of worship and pilgrimage, as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A guided visit helps you read both the architecture and the living religious traditions, with time to pause between the church groups.

## Good to know.

**What does “rock-hewn” mean?**

The churches were carved out of rock rather than assembled from blocks. The same process formed features such as columns, windows and doorways, with trenches and passages linking parts of the complex.

**Is Lalibela a museum or an active religious site?**

It is a living place of Ethiopian Christian worship and pilgrimage. Allow worshippers space and follow the guide’s advice on where to stand, enter and photograph.

**Is the flight from Addis Ababa included?**
